Tryfon Antonakakis

Co-founder & co-CEO

Tryfon is a scientist and ex-professional athlete turned serial entrepreneur with a background in engineering and applied mathematics.

From metamaterials to multi-physics software to bioengineering, Tryfon leads Multiwave Technologies’ interdisciplinary research efforts. He leverages an ability to connect the dots between different scientific fields to build Multiwave’s portable MRI intellectual property portfolio. His scientific expertise enables him to bring answers to some of the big challenges in the field of healthcare.

Tryfon started his career as a professional skier competing at world championships and world cup mogul competitions. He stopped competing in 2010 to follow his passion for science. He joined the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) as a research associate to design particle beam dumps for the Large Hadron Collider. While at CERN, he completed a PhD in applied mathematics at Imperial College London and went on to work at that university as a post-doctorate research associate for a year. At the same time, he was tempted by algorithmic finance and joined hedge fund 80 capital from 2013-2014. Like all professional athletes, he is driven by perfection and applies that discipline across Multiwave’s scientific portfolio. Prior to taking a turn for applied mathematics in the field of metamaterials, Tryfon earned a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from McGill University and a master’s degree in fluid mechanics from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL). He was awarded the Yael Dowker Centenary Prize for the best PhD thesis in the Department of Mathematics of Imperial College London a few years later. Apart from setting himself apart as the first Greek professional mogul skier, Tryfon competed for the McGill Track & Field Varsity Team from 2001-2002. In his spare time, Tryfon enjoys track and field, tennis and basketball.

Panos Antonakakis

Co-founder, co-CEO & Chairman

Panos is a tech entrepreneur with a background in economics and finance. Since he co-founded Multiwave Technologies AG in 2015, he has led efforts to raise more than $8.5 million in dilutive capital and $12m in non-dilutive capital to finance the company’s innovation pipeline. A consensus builder by nature, he has leveraged his chairmanship to drive Multiwave’s pivot from a metamaterial software company to a cutting-edge medical imaging innovator in the field of portable magnetic resonance imaging. He has been instrumental in securing partnerships with a series of academic institutions across Europe and the US, leading MRI original equipment manufacturers, UN agencies as well as managing in-bound and out-bound licensing deals with business partners.

Panos co-founded his first venture in the field of finance at the age of 22. At the age of 24, he started a 9-year journey as an economist at the World Trade Organization (WTO) where he focused on enhancing the standards of living of least-developed countries through trade-related assistance programs in partnership with other international institutions such as the World Bank, IMF, UNDP, among others. While at the WTO, Panos was also a director at the WTO Pension Fund.

He then worked for a leading FMCG company in London where he established the company’s international trade practice from 2010-2014 and was also investment director of the company’s pension fund ($3 billion assets under management).

Since 2015, Panos has leveraged his network in tech and venture capital to gather momentum in support of cutting-edge science, engages in training to help young deep-tech entrepreneurs and is opportunistically an angel investor.

Panos speaks French, English and Greek and is proficient in Spanish. He is a Greek, Canadian and Swiss national. He earned his BA and MA in Economics at McGill University and Concordia University, respectively. Panos played Varsity Tennis and Soccer at McGill in consecutive years between 1996 and 2000 and was vice-president of McGill’s entrepreneur’s club. Outside his business interests, he is a keen athlete taking place in tennis competitions in Switzerland and abroad.

Kseniia Lezhennikova

Metamaterial engineer

Ksenia joined Multiwave in 2021 following a research traineeship at the Aalto University department of electronics and nano-engineering in Finland and a short research contract at Institut Fresnel, France, working on medical imaging applications.

Ksenia started her PhD at Institut Fresnel in 2021 while working full time as a junior RF engineer at Multiwave’s central R&D facility. Her work focuses on hyperbolic metamaterials for medical imaging applications.

Ksenia earned her master’s degree in Physics and Engineering from ITMO University (Russian Federation). Prior to that she completed her bachelor’s at the Institute of Physics of St Petersburg Polytechnic University.

Aris Lanaridis

Senior AI researcher

Aris joined Multiwave as AI researcher in 2017. Previously, he was at Piraeus Bank, where he worked as a back-end developer, applying big data technologies to financial transaction processing, developing constrained optimization algorithms for asset management, and working on subsystem integration using micro-services and messaging middleware.

Prior to that, he worked with a leading cable network in Greece to develop software for automatic video classification, scene detection, content summarization, and news broadcast caption OCR, to be used for storing, tagging and retrieving videos from the network’s archives.

Aris has a degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering and a PhD in Machine Learning from National Technical University of Athens. His work focused on applications of evolutionary algorithms to pattern recognition and multi-objective optimization problems.

His current research interests include using deep learning techniques for medical imaging applications.

Outside his interests in science, Aris is a professional classical guitarist and amateur piano player.
